CRFA aspirants demand free, fair electoral process

Two aspirants in the Central Region Football Association (CRFA) have penned Football Association of Malawi (Fam) to ensure that the electoral process is free and fair.

CRFA is expected to go to polls on November 14 in Salima but two aspirants Simeon Lijeje, who is the current vice chairperson and executive member Owen Munthali have claimed the playing field has not been level.

Among others, the two administrators have demanded that Fam should set up an independent electoral committee, nomination of papers for the candidates be conducted at a declared venue to ensure transparency and accountability.

In addition, Lijeje and Munthali have demanded that the elections should be conducted according to statues and that only qualified people should contest.

“Our expectation is that since there is no minimum qualification as a requirement to becoming a member of CRFA, there should be a vetting process to verify the eligibility of the aspiring candidates as regarding article 23 item 5 through an English proficiency test,” reads part of the letter addressed to Fam.

According to a letter from the two aspirants, article 23, item 5 of CRFA statutes states that candidates should understand, speak, read and write English properly whereas article 4 of CRFA [constitution] states that English shall be official [language] documentation and text shall be written in this language.

Article 50 and 53 of Fam statutes states that there shall be an independent electoral committee which should be in charge of organising the elections and supervising the electoral process.

The two administrators who are both seeking re-election have demanded a response within five, days.

Fam General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, could not answer his mobile phone Sunday.

In the Central Region, incumbent CRFA chairperson Austin Ajawa is seeking re-election whereas former Fam vice president James Mwenda is also eyeing the same post.

Southern Region Football Association (CRFA) chairperson Raphael Humba is expected to go unopposed whereas Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) chairperson Lameck Khonje will compete against Felix Mbonekera.
