Newly named Malawi Men’s Cricket National Teams captains Moazzam Ali Baig and Donnex Kansonkho are beaming with confidence ahead of today’s ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Sub-Regional African Qualifiers opening game.
Malawi will kick-off the campaign against Uganda in Kigali, Rwanda at Gahanga Oval before facing Eswatini tomorrow at IPRC Oval.
Baig said he was excited to represent the country.
“I have just been named captain for the first time. This means a lot to me and after a personal good tournament in 2018 when we played in Botswana in the qualifiers. I do wish to do the same here and also lead from the front,” Baig said.
The captain said it was also an opportunity to travel to another country, thereby giving the drive to perform better.
“It is such a privilege in this life. I hope to do Malawi proud and repay their faith in giving me the honour of captaincy,” Baig said.
The team’s vice captain Donnex Kansonkho said being part of the squad was great.
“What is actually exciting is that we are going to compete with some good cricketing nations and I know I will gain more experience from each game I will play. Similarly, it will also be a good time for me to show what I have to offer Malawi as a national player,” he said.
The qualifiers will begin today and end October 23.
Malawi will compete alongside six other nations including Uganda, Seychelles, Ghana, Lesotho, Eswatini and hosts Rwanda.
