By Yohane Symon:

President Peter Mutharika Wednesday took a swipe at people who are criticising his administration, describing them as disgruntled individuals who are clueless on how to develop the country.

Mutharika was speaking at Mangochi Stadium at a rally he addressed to mark the official opening of the 67-kilometre Mangochi- Liwonde Road which the African Development Bank has funded.

“If this country is not going in the right direction, then let them tell us what the right direction is. They don’t have any ideas on how to develop this country but to oppose whatever my administration is doing. These people are dreaming and I will not wake them up from their slumber,” Mutharika said.

The President, who is ruling Democratic Progressive Party torchbearer in the May 21 Tripartite Elections, said the people who wished him dead were evil minded and unfit to rule the country.

Mutharika said the road would facilitate the growth of businesses in Mangochi and surrounding districts, adding that his administration had secured funds for the construction of Mangochi-Makanjira and Mangochi-Balaka roads which pass through Katema and Chilipa in the district.

He also committed to constructing 250 public secondary schools across the country.

“It pains me that 37 percent of children who sit standard eight examinations do not proceed to secondary school due to lack of schools,” he said.
