Malawi netball icon Mwawi Kumwenda has described the victory of her Australia Suncorp Super Netball League side Melbourne Vixens in the Sargeant- McKinnis Cup as motivating.

Vixens edged NSW Swifts 59-53 on Saturday night to reclaim the trophy in their fourth consecutive win.

According to melbournevixens.com.au, Kumwenda was one of the outstanding performers in the tight match.

“Mwawi Kumwenda started to assert herself on Sarah Klau as Austin got busy, putting in the hard yards out front. MJ picked up a couple of crucial rebounds as Eddy impressed with a huge intercept on the centre pass to push our lead out to eight goals,” the match report reads.

Kumwenda, who registered 37 goals, described the match as very tough.

“We did not have it easy. We sweated our way to victory. We were up against a very tough opponent. But we performed well as a team and I am happy. We finally lifted the cup and we are motivated to continue winning,” she said.

Her coach Simone McKinnis said she was pleased with the way her side was able to grind out the victory.

“It wasn’t the start we were after but I am absolutely rapt with the finish. It was tight at three quarter time but to finish the way that we did, I’m really happy with that,” McKinnis told the club’s website.

Vixens lead the ladder with 36 points from 11 games, four more than second-placed West Coast Fever.

They have a week to recover and prepare for a Round 12 match against Sunshine Coast Lightning on Sunday.
