CWED dominate Massa athletics championship
Central West Education Division (CWED) dominated Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) athletics championship held at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
CWED scooped 27 medals followed by South East Education Division (SEED) and North Education Division (NED) with 21 and 11 medals respectively.
On fourth position was Central East Education Division with nine medals, whereas Shire Highlands Education Division scooped nine medals. South West Education Division finished last after winning four medals.
During the competition, CWED won 12 gold medals, 10 silver medals and five bronze medals, whereas SEED scooped eight gold and silver plus four bronze medals. NED won four gold and silver plus three bronze medals.
All the winners received various prizes including medals, text books among others.
The athletes competed in relay race, javelin, track and field race at junior and senior categories.
Speaking during the prize presentation, deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Vincent Ghambi, hailed Massa for revamping the sport in primary and secondary schools.
Massa general secretary, Blackson Malamula, described the inaugural athletics championship as a success.
“The coming in of athletics in schools will greatly impact on the development of sports in general. Massa will continue to perfectly administer sport in schools.
The inaugural K11 million athletics national championship started in October with funding from Malawi National Council of Sports.
