Chessam publicist, Makhosi Nyirenda, said champions for ladies and open categories will be determined by a nine-round Swiss pairing system.

In the open section, Alfred Chimthere, Fide Master Gerald Mphungu, Paul Khuphwathea, Fishern Mwagomba, Chiletso Chipanga and Joseph Nyambalo, must keep an eye on Zambian International Master Chitumbo Mwali.

Together with defending champion Candidate Master, Godwin Phiri, Mwali dominate the Malawi championship.

Nyirenda said they expect a few Zambians and a Tswana in the open section to compete with locals who qualified from regional leagues. Some 30 players are expected in this section.

The ladies’ category, whose regulars include Ellen Mpinganjira and Woman Fide Master, Linda Jambo, might face the challenge of Zambian Phylis Mwilolo.

The ladies’ category will field 20 players, including 15 locals.

Nyirenda said the open category’s winner will walk away with K300,000 plus a trophy and K120,000 for the runner up. Third place winner will pocket K60,000.

The winner of the ladies’ section will pocket K100,000 with the runner-up receiving K60,000. Third-placed player will get K40,000.

Played on rotation around regional leagues, the championship turned international last year.
