United Kingdom-based comedian Daliso Chaponda performed for the first time at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre in a sold-out show.
During the Chaponda got a golden buzzer a reminiscent of the comedian’s exploits in Britain’s Got Talent and also a symbol of appreciation for performing at the hotel.
The comedian underlined his prowess in the comedy realm when he delivered a one-hour showdown that saw him roasting a number of people including his father, who was part of the audience alongside his mother.
Throughout his set, Daliso showed his flexibility by mingling with the audience and connected with them by delivering jokes that they were familiar with.
Apart from frying his father, Daliso also made jokes that targeted prominent names in the country.
“This is my seventh show in the country but this is my first sold out show,” the comedian, who performed in Lilongwe early this year, said after the show.
Before Daliso, who plans to come back in December this year, Kenyan-born British comedian Imran Yusuf warmed up the stage.
Despite being his first time in the country, Yusuf joked about the Country’s blackouts.
In another joke which left the audience in stitches Yusuf joked about the country having the ‘best doctors’ in the world which “can help one become rich, enlarge private parts and find a job”.
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Michael Usi, who is also a comedian, said he enjoyed the night.
“I would like to commend Daliso for growing his talent. He is exceptional and I have all the hope that comedy will grow in the country,” Usi said.
Miss Culture Malawi 2022 Memory Sanjira said the country has talent and called on people to support all the artistic disciplines.
Amaryllis Hotel alongside Team Entertainers partnered Times Group to hold the stand-up comedy night.
Times Group Head of Programmes Wonder Msiska said Times Group through its 360 degrees reach was committed to recreate partnerships that will uplift growth of the creative sector.
“We have the 360 degrees reach in terms of platform that is powerful and no wonder this event sold out,” Msiska said.
Music performances from Mzati and Mcluther who was backed by Rich Sax spiced up the comedy show that delayed to start and had some sound hiccups in the early stages.
Daliso’s next show is at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Saturday where he will share the stage with Yusuf and Uganda’s Salvado.
