Darts Association of Malawi (Dam) has called on its affiliates to put deliberate policies to promote the sport among the youth and ladies.

Dam President, Isaac Kaneka, said the association was concerned with the low numbers of youngsters and ladies that play darts.

He then called on Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu Darts leagues to put in place strategies for wooing youngsters and ladies into the sport.

“Without the affiliates, we can’t do anything. This is why we have advised our affiliates to set up polices to promote the sport among the youth and ladies,” he said.

Kaneka added that Dam would include ladies and junior players during international assignments to motivate them to take up the sport.

“On our part we feel that we should be including juniors and ladies in the national team. This can also be a motivating factor. We need to participate in international tournaments to field players in all categories, including juniors and ladies,” he said.

Meanwhile, Blantyre and Districts Darts League new-elected Chairperson, Goodwin Mwakanema, said youth and ladies development feature highly on their agenda.

“We know the importance of having the youth because they are the ones to carry on the sport. We need senior players to pass on the knowledge to the youngsters. Similarly, we need to attract more ladies to participate. We are not happy with the percentage of ladies and juniors that play darts,” he said.
