Development Aid from People to People (Dapp) has introduced a shoe making course at its Mikolongwe College targeting youths in selected districts in the Southern Region.

This comes at a time when Dapp discovered that the business of making shoes could help Malawi gain more foreign exchange through shoe exports.

Mikolongwe College Deputy Principal, Zacheria Viano, said Dapp has partnered Technical Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education Authority and Sympany based in the Netherlands for the programme to run for three years.

“This is just a pilot project and after three years, we will be able to make it a national programme through other Dapp colleges,” Viano said.

He said the organisation decided to introduce the course after observing that there is lack of locally-made shoes on the market.

“The students are being trained as shoe producers and upon completion, we will also provide them with equipment,” Viano said.

He said, currently, they have enrolled 15 students at the campus.

“In the South, we have targeted youths from Balaka, Mulanje, Thyolo and Machinga. We have also linked them to other companies so that their products should find ready markets,” he said.
