Darts trials underway

The Darts Association of Malawi (Dam) held three-day national trials at Chancellor College in Zomba from July 16.

The association hosted the trials to scout for national team players ahead of a week-long African Union Region Five Darts Championship to be held in Zambia from August 21.

Dam Tournament Director, Charles Katola, said the trials attracted 130 players such as Austin Chingagwe, Atany Kaipa, Simeon Kaonga, Oswin Banda, Marcel Kasambala, James Mbando, Steve Mnjere and Chipiliro Mzanda.

There were also female players such as Angella Zimba, Diovanna Surtee, Alice Shawa, Emmie Chinyumba, Esnati Chirwa, Memory Katema, Lucy Zalira and Rabecca Changwa.

“The trials were done at the regional level first and attracted players from all clubs in the four regions,” Katola said.

“Each region was requested to select top-eight men, six-top women, three-top juniors’ men and three-top juniors’ women and three-top men veterans and three-top women veterans. Ex-national team players were seeded from regional trials.”

The trials were tough with well-known players such as Joe Zangazanga, Mzanda, Talimba Pazadi, Rabecca Mwale and Virginia da Silva failing to make the grade.

New players that have made it include Oswin Banda and up-and-coming Simeon Kaonga.
