Daudi Chikwanje seeks Maba comeback
Former Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board (MPBCB) General Secretary, Daudi Chikwanje, has resurfaced at Malawi Boxing Association (Maba).
Chikwanje wants to vie for the post of chairperson of the National Professional Boxing Committee.
Maba will hold elections for its sub-committees in Lilongwe on Saturday in its quest to revive professional boxing under the International Boxing Association (Aiba) Pro-Boxing wing.
Ironically, Chikwanje and former ally, Lonzoe Zimba, were part of a breakaway faction that cut ties with MPBCB, then National Professional Boxing Committee.
Chikwanje, who was suspended at MPBCB for his open criticism of the administration, said he was competent to manage professional boxing in Maba.
“I am a qualified and seasoned sports administrator. I have a strategic plan that will help develop professional boxing under Aiba rules and regulations,” he said.
“The good thing is that Maba is recognised by government. The association has structures that can help develop the sport. Maba has sections for amateur boxers, coaches and judges among others.”
Maba President, Justice Katika, said they will not bar anyone from contesting during the elections.
“Maba is a national body, therefore, it needs officials with different backgrounds to serve the interest of the nation,” he said.
