By Sam Banda Jnr:
After a successful outing last year where they among others, performed at Lake of Stars and Sand Music festivals, Daughters Band is intent on giving out more live acts this year.
The group has lined up some performances this month which will see them performing at Chameleon in Lilongwe, Capital Hotel and Lsburgh.
Their first show is on January 24 at Capital Hotel before dating Chameleon on January 26 and then Lsburgh on March 2.
One of the group’s member’s, bassist Phalyce Kumdana, said Tuesday all is set for the shows.
“Last year was a success as we managed to perform in different places including at top festivals such as Lake of Stars, Sand Music and Tumaini. So we want to continue from where we left off last year,” Kumdana said.
She said they have been polishing their performances and were looking forward to the best once again this year.
Despite managing to perform at top festivals, the band is yet to reach out to other areas as regards performances.
The band has restricted itself to performances in Lilongwe where they are based.
Last year, the band made an effort to perform in Blantyre but encountered a setback, receiving a poor audience at Jacaranda Cultural Centre.
The group is yet to hold performances in the Northern Region.
The band was also expected to perform in Zimbabwe but failed following some problems in the country.
Daughters Band was created by Music Crossroads Malawi as part of empowering women.
Music Crossroads Malawi Director, Mathews Mfune, said recently that, through the academy, they have been in the forefront of training female artists.
He said Daughters Band has proved that women can do anything in music and not only restrict themselves to vocals and dancing.
Apart from Kumdana, who plays the bass guitar, other members of Daughters Band are Chikondi Macheso (drummer), Chifundo Sande (vocalist and percussionist), Grace Gama (keyboardist) and Prosperia Ng’oma (lead guitarist).
Apart from Daughters Band, another all-female band that continues to show the best of women exploits in the music industry is Krazy Colours, which is also based in Lilongwe.
