Lilongwe City Centre Member of Parliament (MP), David Bisnowaty, has asked Speaker Richard Msowoya to discipline Malawi Congress Party (MCP) legislators who on Thursday racially abused him in the august House.
Among others, the MCP MPs branded Bisnowaty as a “foreigner” and “Jew” for alleging that during MCP’s one-party rule, hunger was also experienced in the country only that such reports were suppressed.
According to the MP, the conduct of the MCP lawmakers has no room in a dignified House such as the National Assembly.
Reads in part Bisnowaty’s letter to the Speaker: “The racial attacks were completely uncalled for and most unbecoming of an august House that makes laws against discrimination and racism. These MPs have brought this House into serious disrepute by indulging in these illegalities and blatant unconstitutional conduct.”
In an interview on Sunday, Bisnowaty confirmed writing the Speaker, saying he is a Malawian and will not stand by and watch people intimidating him.
Said Bisnowaty: “[My] grandmother was a holocaust survivor and my mother was in a concentration camp for one year. I will not be intimidated by these anti- Semitic and racist remarks, especially from the MCP benches. They should know better that even Jesus Christ himself was a Jew.”
The parliamentarian has also indicated in the letter that he wants the racist remarks removed from the hansard.
