Central Region Women’s football heavyweights DD Sunshine will not face tough opposition in their quest to reach the semifinals of the inaugural Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Women’s National championship.
Sunshine have been drawn in Group B alongside CY Sisters, Bangwe Super Queens, Topik and Ascent Academy whereas Group A comprises top sides Skippers, Blantyre Zero (now under Nyasa Big Bullets management), Moyale and Ntopwa Super Queens.
This follows yesterday’s draw held at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre. The draw attracted three top teams from each region.
National Women’s Football Association General secretary Lina Tegha said they were ready to kick off the national championship.
“We are satisfied with the way the draw has been conducted. This will be a big stage in as far as women’s football is concerned in the country. We have no doubt that we will have a great tournament,” she said.
Tegha also disclosed four semifinalists will receive K1 million as starter pack to prepare for the last four showdown.
“This will also apply to the two teams that will make it to the final. There will also be individual awards like top goal scorer and best coach of the tournament,” she said.
Fam is bankrolling the competition to the tune of K30 million.
The winner will pocket K3 million, with runners up pocketing K1.5 million. The third-placed side will get K750,000. The fourth-placed team will get K500,000.
However, Ntopwa Queens owner Isaac Jomo Osman was not satisfied with the breakdown of the prize money, saying clubs will spend a lot and receive less at the end.
“My worry is the amount the semifinalists will receive because it is not enough. The association could have done better on this but, all in all, as Ntopwa, we are geared for it,” Osman said.
Skippers Coach Abbas Makawa welcomed the draw, saying it was their wish to progress to the semifinals.
“We are in a tough group but are not scared. We will start our preparations now,” Makawa said.
The group stages will kick off on April 19.
