Central Region Women’s Football League champions, DD Sunshine, have spread their wings to the Northern Region by establishing a new team under the same name.
The team’s Managing Director, David Dube, said the move was aimed at identifying talent in districts such as Rumphi, Chitipa and Karonga.
“We are expecting to broaden the base for the National Women’s Football Team. The current team is dominated by DD Sunshine and Blantyre Zero, which is not enough,” Dube explained.
“So, if we can get a wider sample of players through this initiative of establishing another team here, we are sure that we are not only increasing a base for DD Sunshine, but also producing players who can be influential in the national team.”
Dube, who has produced top players including Sweden-based Tabitha Chawinga, said the Northern Region team will be taking part in regional and national competitions from next season.
DD Sunshine has since identified Eston Kadenge Mwafulirwa as the newly-established team’s Head Coach with former DD Sunshine player, Lucy Vinkhumbo, as a Scouting Officer.
Chairperson for the Northern Region Women’s Football Committee, Annie Mseteka, hailed DD Sunshine’s establishment of a team in the region.
“It is a very good development because there are very good players in Chitipa and Karonga. I have seen them playing in the Presidential Cup at district level, but due to lack of transport, they do not usually travel to Mzuzu to participate in regional finals,” she said.
