Malawi women’s football giants DD Sunshine have been invited to participate in Women’s Tertiary Games slated for September 24 to 26 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The tournament will attract 12 teams from Africa including Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, Yanga, Simba Queens, Kick4 Life from Lesotho and Lusaka Dynamos from Zambia.
Sunshine Administrator Agatha Dambo confirmed that the team has already paid the affiliation fee of R5000 (about K270,000) for the event.
“We believe this is an opportunity for us to expose our players. We will try our best to raise funds so that we take part,” Dambo said.
The competition, dubbed The Africa Cup, has been organised in conjunction with Sport and Recreation Office, Laurus Sport Brand, City of Johannesburg and Hollywoodbets.
According to a letter, which we have seen, each participating team will get two sets of Laurus Sport kits which they will take home.
“This is arguably the best time for clubs to revive their women’s football, build sisterhood relationships, network and celebrate and embrace Africa as a continent with magnitude of talent,” the letter reads.
The organisers will be responsible for accommodation, transport and food for the teams during the tournament.
Sunshine will take part in the tournament having failed to register for the inaugural Cosafa Women’s Champions League due to logistical challenges.
Sunshine also participated in a similar tournament in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2010.
The club has produced top women footballers namely Tabitha Chawinga and her sister Temwa, who are both playing for Wuhan FC in China.
