Death toll from the accident that took place at Chichiri Roundabout, which involved members of Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP) of Blantyre Synod women’s guild has risen to five.
One woman died on the spot while others died within the past week.
Confirming the development, Moderator for Blantyre Synod, Reverend Robson Chinkwezule, said this is a kind of tragedy the synod has never encountered.
“As synod, we are deeply shocked by the accident. We have been visiting the casualties in hospital, and we have also bought coffins for the five members,” he said.
He said the choir from Bonawambo CCAP falls under Thuchila Presbytery in Mulanje and was to attend a music festival in Blantyre, organised by the synod’s music department Soon after the accident, well-wishers and the police carried all the casualties to Queen Elizabeth Centre Hospital, where one was confirmed dead.
In an earlier interview, National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, said the driver of the three-tonne truck, registration number NE 1214 lost control of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, Kadadzera said the driver has been sentenced to two weeks imprisonment for drinking and driving and was ordered to pay a fine of K700,000 for reckless driving.
The vehicle was ferrying over 19 Mvano women on that fateful day.
