Dedza councillors query stalled projects
Councillors in Dedza are pressing the government to provide funding for the completion of some District Development Fund (DDF) projects, purportedly due to inadequate funding over the past two financial years, coupled up with poor workmanship by some contractors.
Our investigations so far reveal that two health facilities of Chinkombero and Bena were abandoned at roofing stage while Kang’ombe Bridge, a mortuary at Dedza District Hospital, school blocks at Mpokera and Mkhumbula Primary Schools as well as a girls’ hostel at Katewe community day secondary school are also far from completion.
Chairperson of Dedza district council Works Committee Councillor, Auxius Chidovu claimed in the last two years, they only received K110 million instead of the required K234 million.
“We are going to propose at the full council meeting that this year’s budgetary allocation should focus on finalising the incomplete projects which are crucial to the development of the community,” Chidovu said.
He further expressed dissatisfaction with some contractors, who have done substandard works.
Dedza District Council Director of Public Works Programme, Ellias Mkandawire, said they are working on modalities to establish how much such particular project are going to cost.
“We are going to sit down and come up with project cost but we expect these projects to millions of kwacha’s as we are not yet come up with appropriate estimates for ten projects”, Mkandawire said.
