Deejaying for charity
The term deejaying may have the sound of familiarity, but the deejaying task of Friday night— which had been arranged weeks in advance— had a feeling of uniqueness.
The venue was Bassment Club in Blantyre and the deejay in question was Queen Agnes, who is based in the United States of America but is in Malawi to get back to her roots and fundraise for charity projects she runs in Mzimba District.
Queen Agnes, who used her skills as a tool for uplifting children who were not part of the audience, was one of the performers. The Soul Selectress also performed on the night.
The show, dubbed ‘Bank Alert: All Green Bash’, was organised by Mix Masters Entertainment and Marketing, owned by Christopher Nkhoma, otherwise known as DJ Flexor.
According to Nkhoma, “Bank Alert is a common word used to describe a situation when one has money in his or her account”.
Queen Agnes said in an interview after the performance that she was satisfied with both the turnout and the funds raised.
“Right now I am trying to buy paint to complete classrooms. Last night, I did enough to get four cans [of paint] which will cover one classroom.
“Our 2018 goal is [to get] clean, running water for Timalechi [Primary] School Project [in Mzimba], estimated at $30, 000. It will take great effort of fundraising this year and applying for grants [for us to bring clean, running water there],” Queen Agnes said.
Queen Agnes added that, apart from working towards improving the learning environment at her chosen project site in Mzimba, she would like to empower female DJs.
Mix Masters Entertainment and Marketing promotes musicians and DJs in the country. Some of the artists that the entertainment company has worked with include Gwamba, Lulu, Blakjak, Dictator, Nepman, Malinga Mafia, Maskal, Taygrin and Piksy.
Queen Agnes, daughter to music maestro Bright Nkhata, has hosted a number of international events. The artists she has worked with include Sizzla, Gyptian, Alaine, Richie Spice and Davido.
