Denis Chembezi rides on Esau Kanyenda’s back

Malawi national football team defender Denis Chembezi said he has settled quickly at South Africa Premier Soccer League side, Polokwane City, because of the legacy which his compatriot Esau Kanyenda left at the club.

Chembezi alongside the 2019 TNM Super League golden boot award winner Khuda Muyaba signed for Polokwane in January after Kanyenda facilitated the deals. Before the lockdown in South Africa due to Covid-19, Chembezi featured for the Limpopo side three times whereas Muyaba was unused substitute once and also came in as a late substitute in one of the games.

Chembezi said it was easy to fuse in the side because they received special treatment at Polokwane following Kanyenda’s exploits. “Polokwane has got much respect for Malawian players. Since our arrival, we have been given special treatment as the clubs talks highly of Kanyenda. Club officials told us that Kanyenda did a good job after helping the club earn Premier Soccer League promotion by scoring vital goals.

Currently we are working hard to help the club avoid relegation,” Chembezi said. The former Be Forward Wanderers and Wizards FC player described the lockdown as one of the worst experiences he has ever faced in his football career.

“We don’t know when we will be back on the field of play but it is boring. We cannot do otherwise apart from waiting until all is well,” Chembezi said.

His teammate and compatriot, Muyaba said he was yearning for action when the season resumes. The former Silver Strikers and Moyale Barracks hitman concurred with Chembezi that Kanyenda was an icon at Polokwane.

“I am just waiting for the season to resume as I am yet to start a game. I only came in as second half substitute. All in all we are happy that there was a Malawian [Kanyenda] before us who did a lot for the club no wonder he is still respected,” Muyaba said.
