Derby fever grips Lilongwe; Civil vs Silver

EXPECTATIONS are high among soccer fans in Lilongwe ahead of the Capital City’s derby involving in-form hosts Civil Sporting Club and giants Silver Strikers.

Unlike in the previous encounters when games involving the two teams were predictable due to Civil’s poor form, today’s match at Civo Stadium promises thrills.

“I cannot wait to watch this game. Silver are playing well and aiming at finishing on top of the league table whereas Civil are currently a team to watch. “I see a draw in this game, but I hope Lilongwe fans will watch a nice game,” said Timothy Jere from Area 18.

Lazarus Mgomezulu, a Civil diehard from Njewa in Lilongwe rural, said fans have every reason not to miss this game. “It is a game that can go either way, but considering how both teams are playing at the moment, fans are assured of watching a balanced and exciting game. However, a draw would be a fair result for both teams,” Mgomezulu said.

Silver fan from Area 36, Janet Muliwa, said she was excited that Lilongwe derby is back. “Last season, I did not watch derbies between these teams because Civil were not offering us the much needed tough opposition. But this time around, fans will likely go in large numbers because the story will be different,” Muliwa said.

Some fans interviewed asked for competent officiation and tight security. For the past two seasons, Silver have enjoyed superiority over their fellow giants. Against Civil, Silver have won twice, lost and drawn once in four league meetings.

But the rejuvenated Civil servants have had a brilliant firstround, thereby giving fans hope that competitive derby days are back. Silver are second on the log table with 29 points whereas Civil are fourth with 22 points.
