Derklerk Msakakuona spots Junior Flames’ players
Malawi Under-17 National Football Team coach, Derklerk Msakakuona, has spotted 10 players from the Airtel Rising Stars’ finals held in Mzuzu last weekend.
Before the finals, Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) Technical Director, Benjamin Kumwenda, promised to use such youth tournaments to identify talent.
“I am impressed with the performance of the boys in the Airtel competition. Some of those that I have spotted have the potential to displace those that travelled with us to Mauritius,” Msakakuona said.
“The current squad was selected when we were under pressure. We had no time to train and understand each other. We want to avoid that by identifying players in good time.”
Northern Education Division emerged champions during the competition in Mzuzu.
Msakakuona’s charges finished on the third position during the Cosafa tournament in Mauritius.
Apart from Airtel, Coca- Cola also sponsors an Under-17 competition. First Merchant Bank also funds an Under-20 football competition.
