Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has kept a tight lid on where it sourced K150 million to enable the Malawi National Beach Soccer Team to travel to Mozambique for continental finals.

Sources indicated that Fam went ahead with its plans to secure a bank loan to the tune of K200 million after the association exhausted its allocation from the government and funding from sponsors, FDH Bank.

The source stated that out of K200 million, Fam has allocated K150 million to the Beach Soccer team whereas K50 million catered for the Malawi Under-20 National Football Team that was booted out in the group stages of the Cosafa Youth Championship.

Fam Finance and Administration Director Christopher Mdolo confirmed that the total budget for the beach soccer team is pegged at K150 million but did not disclose the source of funding.

“The budget is around that figure [K150 million] and we hope to meet all our costs during the trip,” he said.

But an inside source told Times Sport that Fam had borrowed money from one of the banks in the country.

“They borrowed K200 million and part of the money went towards the under 20 which was at this year’s Cosafa Youth Championship in eSwatini,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Beach Soccer Association (BSA) Chairperson Gift Chimbalanga has said despite the team’s failure to secure international friendlies, they target to reach the semifinals.

“We are taking on board 13 players, four technical guys and two officials. We are aware that playing against Mozambique, who are the hosts, will be a big challenge but if we can draw and win the next match against Morocco, then we will reach the quarterfinals. We have told the boys what they ought to do to achieve our goal,” he said.
