Lilongwe based female writer Diana Satha on Saturday launched her first book My Father’s Son.

The book is selling at K5,000.

“I am thankful to the people who came to support me. This is the beginning of more things to come. All I can say is let people buy the book and enjoy the story,” she said yesterday.

The launch was spiced up by performances from Neil Nayar and Lily Banda.

“There was no auction but I managed to sell a few copies. I am also happy because I had people coming from as far as Blantyre and Zomba,” she said.

With writers in the country struggling to publish their works, Satha’s book was ready on Friday.

Satha said that she started writing the book when she was 21 in 2007.

“This is a story about two lovers whose parents are against the relationship. There is actually a lot that is in there I mean why their parents are against the relationship. It’s been a long journey into this but I believe people will love the work,” she said.

The writer, who is also a comedian and has been participating in some of Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) competitions, said it was not easy for her to come up with the book.

Satha could not say how much she had spent to publish the book.

“All I can say is I have spent a lot. Actually when I first wrote it, I had no laptop so I had to borrow and that brought in costs as well. Some chapters were lost on the way and I had to write from scratch. At the moment the book is still with the publishers but all is well and we are good to go,” she said.

A lot has been said about female writers not being aggressive but Satha indicated that there were a lot of female writers on the ground but the biggest challenge was to get publishers.

“As I have said I am very excited because people will get to see the serious side of me. Again this is my first novel but hopefully not the only one,” Satha said.
