The Ministry of Youth and Sports is yet to renew contracts for Malawi Under-17 National Football Team Coach Deklerk Msakakuona and U-20 Coach Patrick Mabedi.

Msakakuona and Mabedi each signed one year deals in 2020, with the contracts expiring in November this year.

Ministry of Sports spokesperson Ali Kalichero asked for more time before commenting on the issue.

“Let me consult the Department of Human Resources,” Kalichero said.

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Sub-Technical Committee Chairperson Tiya Somba-Banda said the association submitted a proposal to the government over the possibility of extending the contracts.

“We have already started the process. The secretariat is in touch with government on the matter,” Somba-Banda said.

However, Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda was not readily available for his comment.

After their appointments last year, both Msakakuona and Mabedi were given freedom to choose their backroom staff.

Msakakuona opted for Kamuzu Barracks Assistant Coach Ted Kalinda and Nyasa Big Bullets Reserve Coach Enos Chatama as his assistants whereas Mabedi opted for Charles Kamanga, Peter Mgangira and Steve Madeira as his back room staff.

Msakakuona helped Malawi win bronze at the just-ended Cosafa Boys Region 5 Games held in Maseru, Lesotho.

During the tournament, Malawi drew 1-1 against Botswana in the opening match before suffering a 4-2 loss to Angola in the last group stage match.

But the Young Flames won bronze after thrashing eSwatini 4-0 in the third-place play-off.

On the part of Mabedi, he was dealt a big blow after the Cosafa Boys Under-20 Championship was postponed due to Covid.

However, Mabedi was incharge of the Under-20 during the 2020 Cosafa Youth Championship in South Africa but exited the tournament in group stages after two losses.

They lost 2-0 to Zambia and 2-1 to Namibia but managed to register a 1-0 victory over Comoros.

Mabedi was reluctant to comment on the matter.

“Only Fam can give you that answer,” he said.
