The 2015 Carlsberg Chill DJ Battle winner DJ Doug Fresh, real name Douglas Green, and former Zembani Band dancer Shupi Gama are no more.
DJ Wayne confirmed of DJ Doug Fresh’s death saying he died in the early hours of Wednesday after a long battle with cancer at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
“The industry has lost a talented DJ. He had cancer and, as DJs in the country, we have been holding fundraising shows to raise funds for his treatment. We were praying for his recovery but we lost him early this morning (Wednesday),” he said.
DJ Wayne said DJ Doug Fresh would be laid to rest today in Blantyre.
DJ Doug Fresh made headlines in 2015 when he triumphed in the Carlsberg Chill DJ battle and went away with a brand new Kia Picanto.
Shupi also died Wednesday following a road accident, according to her sister Angellina.
As we went to press Wednesday, details about her burial were not yet known.
Soldier Lucius Banda wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday that he was saddened by the passing on of their former dancer, adding that she performed with them during their show at M1 Centre Point in Lilongwe last Saturday.
Apart from starring with Zembani Band, the versatile dancer worked with Solomonic Peacocks in their different projects.
“She was exceptional in dancing and this is why we used her in our tours for different campaign projects. Her death is a blow to the creative industry,” Solomonic Peacocks Director McArthur Matukuta, said.
