Do not wait for employment, do your part—Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera has asked graduates in the country to focus on creating jobs rather than seeking
employment if this country is to see fast development.

Chakwera was speaking in Chiradzulu yesterday when presiding over the 19th congregation for Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima). He said if Malawi is going to become an inclusively wealthy and middle-income economy as envisioned in Malawi2063 blueprint, it needs graduates who leave college with more than a
qualification.

The President said the country needs graduates with a winning attitude that sees opportunity where others see obstacles and those who use their education to design and build industries, companies, institutions, corporations, infrastructure and services from scratch.

“You have to decide whether you are going to use your education to do and leave something good in your country or waste it on spectating, analysing and critiquing others who are in the arena of great deeds,” he said.

Cunima Chancellor Archbishop Thomas Msusa said it is disheartening to see that there is need for human capital in all sectors but graduates are failing to secure jobs.

He said, as a school, they are trying to mould students to be reliable citizens because it seems the country’s system is failing to achieve that.

“It is worrisome that education changes less the morality of people in the country because it looks like the more someone is educated, the more corrupt they become and, as a school, we want to uproot that culture,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor Bishop Martin Mtumbuka urged the President to use his authority as Southern Africa Development Community Chairperson to improve security and peace in the region.

Cunima graduated 897 students in faculties of nursing and midwifery, science, theology,
commerce, social sciences and education.

From the graduation, Chakwera visited road construction projects in Blantyre starting with Mahatma Gandhi Road Junction lanes expansion project to Chilobwe Road.

Chakwera expressed satisfaction with the progress being made but urged Blantyre City Council to rehabilitate Naperi Bridge because the expansion of the lanes will mean nothing if the bridge is in bad shape.

He further called upon the public to report to relevant authorities suspected corrupt practices rather than rushing to social media to despise their country.
