Donors meet in LL on Songwe power project

Government through the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development is today hosting the joint Tanzania/Malawi donors’ conference to seek financing for the development of the Songwe River Basin.
The conference is being held at the Bingu International Conference Centre and is meant to attract financiers and donors for the development of a l80 megawatt power plant on the Songwe River that will help ease energy problems in the two countries.
The project will also involve the development of 6,200 hectares of land for irrigation with 3,050 hectares on Malawi side and 3,150 hectares on the side of Tanzania.
The conference will be officially opened by Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe, according to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development signed by Principal Secretary, Erica Maganga.
The meeting is being held under the theme, Malawi and Tanzania Cooperating to harness Songwe River Basin Water Resources for Socio-Economic Development.
“The Conference will be preceded by meetings of technical and senior government officials from both Governments.
“It is expected that the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development will provide detailed outcomes of the conference to the public and all stakeholders at the conclusion of the conference,” the statement said.
The meeting is being attended by government ministries, departments, agencies, civil society, Non-Governmental Organisations, the academia and other stakeholders.
