Double roles

LEADING BY EXAMPLE—Silver against Wanderers

Silver Strikers Captain Young Chimodzi Junior has been earmarked for the position of physical trainer a development which could force him to retire soon.

The Central Bankers were in the process of recruiting a physical trainer but Zambian coach Daniel Kabwe recommended that the defensive midfielder should double roles in the forthcoming season.

Silver Chief Executive Officer, Thoko Chimbali, said Chimodzi Junior was one of the possible candidates for the post.

“He is still the captain of the team but we are also considering him to be the physical trainer. As a captain, he showed some leadership skills that he can lead fellow players during the physical training. We have big plans for him as we planning to send him abroad for a two-week course on the same so that he gets the required skills after travel restrictions have been lifted,” Chimbali said.

On a good day, Chimodzi Junior bosses the midfield with his intelligent displays. But the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) has already signed youthful midfielder Chikondi Kamanga who has similar attributes which means the aging Chimodzi Junior might not be involved often in the next campaign.

However, Chimodzi Junior refused to comment. One of the local coaches, Milias Pofera said Silver has taken the right step.

“It is good move to give royal players other roles as they near retirement. He just need to be supported so that he graduates properly from a player to a physical trainer,” he said.

Chimodzi Junior started playing in Super League in 2005 while at Civo Service United before joining Escom United. He also played for clubs in India and Greece before rejoining Silver. The defensive midfielder has won four TNM Super League titles, two each for Silver and Escom.

Meanwhile, Silver have also opened negotiations with goalkeeper coach Sibusiso Padambo over renewing his contract. Padambo’s contract with Silver is set to expire at the end of this month.
