Police in Mponela, Dowa have arrested a traditional doctor identified as Chikumbutso George, 20, on suspected murder charges.
Police public relations officer for Mponela Kondwani Kandiado confirmed the development in an interview.
He said Alex Ndalira, a brother to the deceased, reported to the police that his sister, Kathela Sungaunyolo, 51, died mysteriously after taking a concoction brewed by the accused.
“The deceased had been sick for a long time and had been on ARV treatment, having been diagnosed HIV positive five years ago. On the material day, it is reported that she summoned the suspect, who is an African doctor to prepare and administer some medicine to her and another friend, Dorica Sam, 47, who had also been sick,” Kandiado said.
The herbalist injected the deceased and the other patient with the medicine he had prepared on their legs.
According to Kandiado, immediately after being injected with the dosage, the condition of the deceased deteriorated, and upon noticing that her patient’s condition had deteriorated, the herbalist fled the village.
The other patient, Sam, alerted other villagers on what had actually happened and they quickly mobilised resources and rushed both the deceased and Sam to Madisi Hospital where the deceased was pronounced dead on arrival.
“Our officers visited the scene where the two had been injected with the medicine and found 3 bottles of unidentified traditional medicine, 15 syringes and needles,” Kandiado added.
The suspect is from Chimkoka Village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa while the deceased is from Jaulani village in the same area.
