Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Cadets from the Northern Region have vowed to depart from the violent ways of politicking in the aftermath of the year 2017, which was characterised by political violence.
The blue youth wing, which conducted a cleaning exercise in Mzuzu City yesterday, said they do not want to engineer any sort of violence as they have realised their role in DPP is to promote democracy.
They youth leaguers said they would want to contribute to the country’s development by helping President Peter Mutharika with constructive ideas.
The Cadets’ Northern Region Director, Kelvin Chirambo, made the pronouncement amidst a barrage of accusations that his subjects were behind the violence which occurred during the Gonapamuhunya Cultural Festival in Rumphi District last year.
“We promise that we will never be involved in any form of violence. We believe that developments which our President has been implementing are the major tool to help us convince people to vote for him come 2019.
“The picture which we want to portray to Malawians is that the youth should stop all their bad behaviors and be good citizens of the country. Some people say we are doing nothing to help the President to develop the country but look, today, we have joined Beautify Malawi in cleaning Mzuzu City streets,” Chirambo said.
But social commentator Charles Kajoloweka said the DPP Cadets’ gesture to clean the city should not be aimed at blackmailing Malawians into believing that they have changed while they have not.
