DPP cannot rig—Saulos Chilima

DAUSI—It is part of politics

State Vice-President Saulos Chilima, who is also Tonse Alliance running mate in the fresh presidential election, has charged that he will on Saturday reveal plans the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) allegedly hatched to rig the poll scheduled for Tuesday next week.

Chilima, however, maintained that the plans have failed and that no one will rig the election because Tonse Alliance has a team of computer experts who are on the ground monitoring every system.

The vice-president, who is on a campaign tour in the Northern Region, then asked Malawians to go and vote in large numbers, saying their votes will be protected.

Chilima said some people are discouraged to go and vote because some DPP leaders allegedly bought their national identity cards to be used in the alleged rigging scheme.

However, he said their information technology (IT) experts are tracking any transaction related to the election process and assured the electorate not to get worried.

“We know that some are discouraged to go and vote. They feel national IDs will be used to rig the election. Let me assure you that it has failed. We have experts on the ground. On Saturday, I will reveal all their plans aimed at rigging the election. We want to prove to them that they have failed,” Chilima said.

But DPP spokesperson Nicholas Dausi described Chilima’s statements as lies, saying the opposition parties have no facts.

“The North cannot vote for [Malawi Congress Party (MCP)]. We know that they do not have facts to win the North. That is the reason they are busy spreading lies,” Dausi said.

In their remarks, Senior Chief Mwankhunikira and Sub-Traditional Authority Kawazamawe of Rumphi said the Tonse Alliance has won the trust of Malawians.

Chilima has camped in the north since Sunday canvassing votes for MCP leader Lazarus Chakwera who is leading the Tonse Alliance.

Throughout his tour, that first took him to Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi and Nkhata Bay today before proceeding to Mzimba tomorrow, Chilima was consistent in messages of cheap fertiliser, loans, job creation and servant leadership which he said will truly serve the people.
