DPP is harassing me—Bon Kalindo

Mulanje South Member of Parliament (MP), Bon Kalindo, has said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is using state agents, including the Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) to harass him for promoting Vice President, Saulos Chilima, to be the party’s torchbearer in the 2019 tripartite elections.

Kalindo said on April 24, this year, MHC sealed his house in Mulanje claiming that he had an outstanding bill totalling K2 million.

He said after dialogue with the service provider the two sides agreed that he owed MHC K900,000.

“I was given a period until July 2018 to settle the bill. Surprisingly, during the early hours of today (Tuesday), MHC officials came and closed the house again. I went to pay the bill only to be told they do not work on a public holiday, yet they closed the house on a public holiday,” he said.

Kalindo said the house in question is used as his constituency base and he pays K85,000 per month.

The lawmaker alleged that he had been remitting the money to MHC through one of his workers who was staying in the house. He said it was this employee who fled with the money and some items from the house.

“I reported the matter to Mulanje Police and they are currently looking for him,” he said.

But Mulanje Police spokesperson, Graciam Ngwira, said he was not aware of the complaint and asked for time to verify Kalindo’s claim.

Kalindo further alleged that the DPP is plotting to kill him, confiscate his cars by claiming he got them dubiously and that the party has lined up three women to implicate him in paternity issues.

But DPP spokesperson, Francis Kasaila, said Kalindo is just seeking sympathy votes from his constituents.

“I should say this: if Kalindo was not following up the rules and regulations of MHC, the corporation is at liberty to take action. The media should also help on this by bringing to light everybody who is not following the country’s laws to the book.

“He should know that just because he is DPP or a Member of Parliament then he cannot be wrong, thus a bad perception. In fact, I should commend MHC because these are the people who are destroying the country,” he said.

Kasaila also dismissed the other allegations that Kalindo made.

“If the women were really impregnated, it is up to them to dish out facts. There is DNA test these days! But as a party, we will not waste our time with one person; we serve millions of people,” he said.

Since former first lady Callista Mutharika declared that Chilima is the right candidate for DPP, those who have supported the opinion claim to be harassed.

One of the casulties is Afik Mbewe who has since been fired from his position as DPP deputy regional governor in the North.
