DPP offices up in flames

In a twist of events, some people in Lilongwe partially burnt Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) offices Monday, a third incident of similar nature in two months.
The party’s secretary general, Grezelder Jeffrey, said unknown people petrol-bombed the offices.
“In the wee hours of Monday, some people threw gallons of petrol at our offices but, fortunately, they threw the gallons at a distance so it is only the office door that did catch fire. Currently, we are not suspecting anyone but we have reported the matter to the police,” she said.
Central Region Police spokesperson, Kingsley Dandaula, said they had received a report of the incident.
“We are investigating the matter but we want to warn people against the barbaric acts of petro-bombing people’s properties. We are investigating the incidences,” he said.
Recently, some unknown people also burnt a motor vehicle belonging to Human Rights Defenders Coalition Chairperson, Timothy Mtambo, at his house in Lilongwe.
Malawi Congress Party office, that of its vice-president Sidik Mia and the party’s Member of Parliament Richard Chimwendo Banda’s house in Dowa were also torched after the May 21 elections.
Police are yet to make any arrest in connection with the arson. People in the country have been demonstrating against elections results.
