DPP panics over Lazarus Chakwera’s statement

Two days after using the fired minister of information, Malison Ndau, to attack Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President and Leader of Opposition, Lazarus Chakwera, for his recent statement that Peter Mutharika has failed as a leader, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has again attacked Chakwera.

In what is probably the most scathing statement he has ever made, Chakwera described Mutharika as a failure whose government is in a state of emergency.

Chakwera described Mutharika’s leadership as one which is like a pair of scissors designed to cut the thread by which the country is hanging and send the citizens spiralling into the abyss of deeper levels of poverty.

In a statement that the DPP read out and released in Lilongwe yesterday, the party said Chakwera should know that unlike in the church where he did not have to justify the messages, in politics, they will take him to task.

“We thought of holding this meeting to respond to the press statement that Honourable Lazarus Chakwera made. We feel that the statement can be challenged because it contains a lot of allegations against our State President Professor Peter Mutharika and it contains a lot of lies and it cannot go without a response,” DPP Acting Secretary General, Francis Mphepo, said at the onset.

The statement which the party Publicity Secretary, Francis Kasaila, read out at the party headquarters says they will also demand proof and even ask Chakwera to resign as Leader of Opposition.

According to the party, taking Chakwera to task could easily be the case now because he appears not to know his job as to be challenged on what he is saying is a rare and disquieting phenomenon to him as a former pastor.

The statement said Chakwera is still campaigning and hopes that somehow through the back door, some constitutional or legal mishap, Mutharika can be removed and he can take over.

“This is his persistent dream. A dream that underlies his pathologic quest for power,” it reads.

The DPP says not only Chakwera is a failed politician but his understanding of economics and other issues is dangerously wanting.

“Everyone knows what the impact of natural disasters like floods, drought, earthquakes can have on our economy. Even the impact of the low levels of water in the Shire on our power generating capacity and industrial productivity cannot be questioned. These are not man-made challenges.

“As a former man of God, he should know how sometimes God allows his people to go through some such sufferings. These are natural challenges which government is addressing now. They are not caused by political failures. Such talk from Hon. Chakwera only shows him at the peak of his inexperience,” the statement reads.

It also says Chakwera’s complaint that the government did not give straight answers concerning the Mutharika’s health has completely no basis.

“We know that Hon. Chakwera is pushing this agenda because he wishes the President were ill in the desperate hope that somehow he can take over the presidency of the country via the medical backdoor,” the other part of the statement reads.
