DPP youth wing deplores Mzuzu violence

Blue League, a youth wing of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), says the tendency of sponsoring young people to engage in political violence is old fashioned, and has no space in a democratic Malawi.

Blue League Events Director, Dumisani Lindani, said this on the sidelines of maize distribution exercise to 300 households, conducted at Mpatsa Community Day Secondary School in Traditional Authority Tengani in Nsanje.

This was in direct reference to riots that erupted during a joint rally by opposition parties in Mzuzu where thugs with pangas terrorised people.

“We would like to condemn, in strongest terms possible, the tendency of using young people to engage in violent acts. Violence is old fashioned … We are aware of the failed attempts by some opposition elements to link the DPP youth in the Mzuzu fracas.

“The youth in DPP have grown much wiser and have learnt that nothing has ever been built [using] violence. We therefore would like to extend a call to our counterparts in People’s Party, Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and other opposition political parties to avoid being used,” he said.

Lindani said they were planning to engage the youth from other political parties in talks on how Malawians can co-exist.

Nsanje Central Legislator Francis Kasaila, who is also Transport and Public Works Minister, warned leaders against engaging young people in political violence saying the practice always backfires.

“The Blue League, which is a congress of DPP youth has proved once more that it is a collection of young professionals who are keen to condemn violence and invest their political interests in a more productive way,” said Kasaila.

On the maize distribution exercise, Kasaila, who is also DPP spokesperson, hailed Blue League for doing something to assist those in need of food.

“There are a lot of people who are talking about hunger, but very few are taking steps towards addressing it or its effects. I am glad that the youth in DPP are among those few that have decided to take a step beyond just talking,” he said.

The maize was bought from Admarc using funds raised within the grouping.

Blue League is a merger of all DPP youth wings such as the Blue Professionals, Progressive Youth League and PDC, and President Peter Mutharika is the patron.
