Draft Control of Goods Act ready
The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism says it has concluded soliciting views from relevant stakeholders to be incorporated into the draft Control of Goods Act.
The next stage is for the piece of legislation to be presented to Cabinet and later Parliament.
If passed into law, the Act will facilitate trade between Malawi and other countries.
Spokesperson at the ministry, Wiskesi Nkombezi, said thorough consultations had been made with all relevant stakeholders.
Some of the provisions contained in the draft include prohibiting, restricting or otherwise controlling the import into, or the export from, Malawi of any specified goods whenever necessary.
“The Act has been finalised in terms of review and it will soon be sent to Cabinet. With it, we hope to safeguard the local market from abuse.
“We are continuing with reforming the operating environment. Very soon, we will also review the Small and Medium Enterprises policy,” he said.
Malawi recently moved 23 steps upwards on the World Bank Doing Business Index for 2017, moving from position 133 to position 110, out of 190 economies.
