Dual citizenship awaits Peter Mutharika nod

President Peter Mutharika is yet to assent to Dual Citizenship Bill which Parliament passed in the November 2018 meeting.

Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs spokesperson Pilirani Masanjala said the bill was sent to APM Friday.

“The Citizenship Bill was not assented to. It has been submitted to the President for assent,” he said.

The law allows for dual citizenship for Malawians with government’s hope of improving socio-economic activity among Malawians.

Meanwhile, APM has assented to six bills, of which three are money bills that Parliament approved.

Other bills Mutharika has assented to are the Corrupt Practices Amendment Bill of 2018, the Mines and Minerals Bill of 2018 and Reserve Bank of Malawi Bill of 2018.

Masanjala said the money bills include the Opec Fund for International Development (Nkhata Bay Town Water Supply and Sanitation Project) Loan Authorisation Bill of 2018, The African Development Fund (Shire Valley Transformation Programme) Loan Authorisation Bill of 2018 and Nigeria Trust Fund (Shire Valley Transformation Programme) Loan Authorisation Bill.

The ministry is yet to submit the Tobacco Industry Bill, Pharmacy and Medicines Regulations Bill, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Last Mile Connectivity for Rural Areas and National Data Project Loan Authorisation Bill as well as China Construction Bank Corporation Loan Authorisation Bill.
