Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District is under threat of coronavirus due to congestion, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Senior Protection Officer, Henok Ochalla, has warned.
Ochalla said to minimise the Covid-19 threat, UNHCR decided to train health workers at the camp on preventive measures.
“The camp has about 40,000 people but the area is too small to cater for such a huge number of people.
“In an event where the virus catches one of the people, the spread will be so fast, so we want to put in place all precautionary measures to avoid such occurrences now that the country has not recorded any case of the disease,” Ochalla said.
Dowa District Commissioner, Alex Mdooko, said the training has been long overdue as most people at the camp and across the district need experts to help them.
“The camp needs a lot of sensitisation and training on how they may stay safe amid this outbreak,” he said.
