Edgar ndi Davis Band fundraises for netball
Edgar ndi Davis Band spearheaded by lawyers Davis Njobvu and Edgar Kachere on Saturday night performed at Blue Elephant in Blantyre during a show aimed at raising funds for netball supporters who are planning to travel to Namibia to cheer the Malawi National Netball team also known as the Malawi Queens.
The concert which also featured veteran Giddes Chalamanda and Chimwemwe Maloya, attracted a fair audience and saw the duo of Edgar and Davis calling upon people to start supporting the netball team which they said would never let the country down.
The sentiments attracted cheers from the audience and this was more like a reaction to the heart break Malawians suffered on Saturday afternoon a t Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre following a 1-2 defeat by Malawi National Football team to Zimbabwe.
“Lets support our girls who have never let us down, we need the netball supporters to go and cheer the team in Namibia,” said the duo before pledging K100,000 to the supporters.
The donation by Edgar and Davis forced some people to come forward and make contributions which were received by Netball Association of Malawi general secretary Carol Bapu.
However, some people wanted the presence of the Queens’ players but Bapu said they had travelled to South Africa and promised that they would be available during the next fundraising show this coming weekend at Motel Paradise in Blantyre featuring Lucius Banda.
The concert would surely have attracted a bigger audience had the Malawi National Football team defeated Zimbabwe as it could have acted as a platform for celebration.
But with the defeat many people were disappointed and decided to stay indoors on a cold night. Nevertheless despite this setback others braved the soccer teams’ embarrassment and cold night and came to support the netball supporters by enjoying Edgar ndi Davis vibes.
The problem of sound engineering continues to haunt shows in the country and it was the same during the Edgar ndi Davis concert which delayed the performances.
But despite this, the acts went on with people enjoying the vibes which started with Maloya, who offered several songs originally done by other artists before leaving the stage for Chalamanda.
The veteran musician has come a long way and entertained Malawians but at 85 years, he is getting old and losing some of his steam although he still has the energy to dance.
His voice is not that strong as in the past but he continues to sing. He offered some of his popular songs on the night including ‘Napolo,’ and ‘Che Meli.’
The musician has in the previous shows been concentrating on vocals moving out of the task of playing both vocals and the guitar but Chalamanda reminded the audience of his past exploits when he played the guitar during his last piece ‘Nsanje.’
After finishing his set Chalamanda joined Edgar and Davis as the show cont inued and people were treated to the song ‘Chalamanda,’ in which the duo praises the veteran singer for his music saying there is only one ‘Chalamanda,’ who has stood out and continues to sing.
In the song, the duo of Edgar and Davis speak of several other artists who have made headlines with one hit songs citing among others Collins Bandawe, who came out with ‘Tchekela Maluzi,’ but today is no longer in the picture and yet Chalamanda is still singing.
Edgar and Davis Band then continued its exploits belting out several of their songs from their albums including ‘Kalekale,’ and ‘Zintchito Zina,’ off their album Energy Saver.
Blue Elephant supported the netball supporters by offering the venue.
