Education tops Mkango corporate social responsibility
Mineral exploration company, Mkango Resources, has said it will continue supporting Malawi’s education sector as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
Country Manager, Burton Kachinjika, said this recently when the company officially handed over two kitchens and dining halls to Changa and Mphembezu Primary schools in Phalombe District.
The facilities have been built as part of the school feeding programme, which is said to be critical in improving primary school enrolment across the country.
The facilities have been constructed following a partnership between the mineral exploration company and United Kingdom-based humanitarian organisation Zero Hunger.
In the agreement, Zero Hunger will be providing food.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kachinjika said education remains one of the key areas the company has committed itself to support whilst operating in Malawi.
“As a company, we appreciate the role education plays in national development, so we will continue supporting the sector to ensure communities here are empowered to actively participate in our operations,” Kachinjika said.
He also said Mkango Resources is providing scholarships to 18 secondary school students each year.
In a separate interview, Zero Hunger Country Manager, Amargeet Sigh, said the food his organisation will be providing will enhance class attendance among learners.
The facilities have cost Mkango Resources about K5 million.
Mkango Resources has been conducting exploration activities of rare earth on Songwe hill in Phalombe since 2010.
