Ekwendeni Hammers, Silver Strikers finalise cup final preparations

MEETING AGAIN —Ekwendeni and Silver

FDH Bank Cup finalists Silver Strikers and Ekwendeni Hammers have finalised preparations for Friday’s FDH Bank Cup final.

The two sides meet again less than a week after clashing in a TNM Super League match that Silver won 2-0.

Silver Assistant Coach MacDonald Yobe said they had completed their preparations for the inaugural final at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

“Our preparations have been going according to plan. We are almost where we want to be. The boys are geared for the match. Of course, we know it will be a tough game but we are ready.

“We beat them last week but that was a league match and it is gone. Cup matches are quite different, so we are not taking our opponents for granted. We are doing our final touches, bearing in mind that Ekwendeni is a good side,” Yobe said.

The last time Silver won silverware was in 2019 when they beat Karonga United 1-0 at the same venue to lift the Airtel Top 8 Cup.

Ekwendeni arrived in Lilongwe Wednesday ahead of the match and coach Etson Kadenge Mwafulirwa expressed optimism that his charges would take the cup to their Mzuzu base.

“We have trained very well and we are excited to go into this final. Anything is possible in a game of football and we are hoping for the best. We are going into the final as underdogs but I know the capabilities of my boys.

“Their response in training has been fantastic and morale is high. This is what gives us the confidence that we will pull a surprise,” Mwafulirwa said.

Ekwendeni will have nothing to lose in the match as this is the first time for them to reach the final of a national cup after their debut Super League season.

The cup is the richest sports competition in the country ever, with the winner walking away with K25 million while K8 million will go to the runners-up.
