South Africa based Malawian pugilist Ellen Simwaka will defend the women’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight title against undefeated Zambian boxer Lina Kasekwa on August 25 in Johannesburg.

Initially, Simwaka was expected to meet Patience Mastara of Zimbabwe but the organisers changed the bill two weeks ago after IBF did not sanction the fight.

Following the development, Mastara was replaced by Kasekwa.

Simwaka said her wish was to retain the belt against available opponent.

“I started my preparations last month. I just want to defend the belt to improve my rank and attract more offers,” she said.

Simwaka hailed her coach Vusi Mtolo for securing sponsorship for her training gear from Grip Boxing Gear.

The Malawian, 25, has 10 wins including seven knockouts, five defeats and two draws whereas Kasekwa, 25, has a perfect record of six wins including two knockouts.

Simwaka produced a master-class performance to beat favourite South Africa’s Sharadene Fortuin on split decision at Galleria Sandton’s Premium Conference on May 26 to win the belt.

Two judges scored the fight 98-91 and 95-94 for Simwaka while another judge gave it to Fortuin 95-94.
