Ellis in Ellis to Ellis exhibition

Blantyre-based visual artist Ellis, who is renowned for his batik works, continues to make strides in his art as he is set to hold an exhibition at La Galleria in Lilongwe.

The exhibition starts today through to July 14.

Having held a joint exhibition with Panji Tembo at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre, titled Traditional Tales of Malawi, Ellis now brings ‘From Ellis to Ellis’.

La Galleria has been giving artists a platform to showcase their work.

The venue recently also exhibited the works of David Mzengo and Peter Paul Ndyani.

“This exhibition is all about the role that parents play in the development of their children. As you are aware that we have a lot of children out there who are without parents. The question is: is it true they really don’t have parents? The answer is no,” Ellis said.

He said children need proper care from parents and that some parents have been irresponsible by running away from their responsibilities, making their children suffer.

“No education, no food for them because parents abscond their duties and this has led to the world being full of children without a proper future,” he said.

The visual artist said parents have a role to play in raising their children and giving them all their needs.

“I will display 15 pieces which are all talking about the problems faced by children who have been abandoned and this affects the community but also the country as a whole. I am calling it From Ellis to Ellis because I have used Ellis as father and Ellis as a child,” Ellis said.

La Galleria proprietor Elson Kambalu, who is also a renowned visual artist and filmmaker, said the exhibition starts tomorrow and ends on July 14.

“Ellis is one of the most hardworking Malawian artists. He has crafted an identity for himself as a contemporary batik artist and his work can grace any stage across the world,” Kambalu said.

Ellis recently also topped the list of top sellers at La Galleria.
