Artist and filmmaker Elson Kambalu on Wednesday had a private screening of his movie Mlandu Wa Njinga/Case of a Bicycle at Jacaranda Cultural Centre in Blantyre.

The closed screening was targeted at art students from Otis College of Art and Design from United States of America.

The screening of the movie came soon after an interaction between students from the US College and local artists where they briefly shared their works.

However, due to other circumstances, the gathering did not finish watching the whole movie.

But despite not finishing the whole movie, the gathering seemed to be impressed with Mlandu Wa Njinga/Case of A Bicycle.

Kambalu said he was excited to show the movie to art students from Otis College, adding that this was a warm-up ahead of the main screening at M-Theatre Saturday.

“I am looking forward to the best during the main screening on Saturday (tomorrow). All I can say is that people should come and sample the movie,” he said.

Kambalu will also have another screening at the same venue on June 3 before moving on to other places.

Kambalu has since said that he is targeting taking the film to international film festivals.

Kambalu apologised during the screening for some technical glitches but he assured that everything would be fine at M -Theatre.

“Don’t mind about the picture, the sound and everything here but all will be well at M-Theatre and all is ready,” he said.

The recipient of the 2015 Art Award in the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Innovations Award, during the screening, also took time out to explain to the audience how he found himself in the film industry.

In the movie, Kambalu worked with musicians such as JJ, Agorosso, Malala and Jaco Jana.

He also told the audience that in the movie he used actors and actresses who have never starred in a movie before.

Mlandu Wa Njinga/Case of A Bicycle is a feature length fictitious movie which runs for two hours and tells the story of a young man called Ntaja, who comes out of prison and later goes on a search for a woman he wanted to marry prior to his incarceration.
