Energy stakeholders renew commitment

By Brenda Kayo:
The Ministry of Energy has resuscitated the Malawi Renewable Energy Partnership Group (MREPG), made up of the ministry, development partners and stakeholders in the energy sector, in a quest to promote efficiency.
Secretary for Energy Alfonso Chikuni said Tuesday that they want MREPG to be in the forefront when it comes to delivering on Malawi’s Energy Policy and Renewable Energy Strategy.
“As such, MREPG has agreed to increase investments in renewable energy, increase access to modern energy services and improve the efficiency of energy infrastructure with the National Planning Commission.
“We have to unify our strategies with National Planning Commission strategies under the critical infrastructure sector. Energy falls under that. So, what we have agreed is that we have to reorient our efforts and our strategies.
“We have also agreed that members of the group should consider mandatory membership to the grouping so that we can have control over plans and integrate plans of the subsector into the national strategy,” Chikuni said.
Chikuni added that MREPG will ensure that there is access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy in Malawi.
As part of renewing their commitment, Ministry of Energy officials, representatives of development partners, and non-State actors signed a pact.
