PresidentiaL aspirant in the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), Frank Mwenefumbo, has accused the incumbent party leader Enock Chihana of being dictatorial and working to frustrate democracy in the party.

Mwenefumbo, who is also Member of Parliament for Karonga Central Constituency, made the accusation in Lilongwe yesterday when he briefed journalists on the injunction the Chihana faction secured on Friday to stop the former from going ahead with the convention.

The Mwenefumbo faction was scheduled to hold its convention from April 28-29 at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe.

However, the faction was served with a court order restraining it from proceeding with the plan just as buses ferrying supporters of Mwenefumbo started arriving in the Capital City.

“We are very worried with what Honourable Chihana has done. We have been caught off balance because we never expected him to do this,” Mwenefumbo said.

He pointed out that his faction has already instructed their lawyers to vacate the injunction to pave the way for the holding of the convention.

“As law-abiding citizens and party members, we will respect the order. But we are surprised by this order because it is coming from the same court that cleared the way for this convention. We are also amazed that court officials have switched off their phones thereby denying us our right to vacate that injunction. We wonder what has happened to us that we should be closed out,” Mwenefumbo said.

Aford National Chairman, Gulani Mikayele Guta, said what is happening in the party is quite strange to him.

But Guta vowed that they are determined to remove Chihana from the position “so that democracy continues to reign in the party”.

“And in the event that Chihana retains his position at the convention and I am also re-elected as national party chairperson, I will resign immediately. I cannot work with Chihana anymore,” he said.

Notable party officials that attended the briefing included Secretary General, Christopher Ritchie and Dan Msowoya, among others.
