Enovk Banda to represent Malawi in Russia
Enovk Makoka Banda of Kawale Lilongwe will on October 2 this year represent Malawi in the World Draught Games in Russia.
This follows his triumph in defence of the national title competition which the Draught Association of Malawi (Dam) organized at Mphatso Motel in Mzuzu from Saturday and it ended Sunday.
Banda, 20, finished top with 49 points beating 28 participants drawn from the country’s regions.
But he had to survive the scare on head-to-head count considering that his runner-up Madalitso Thom Baba also from the Capital City, recorded same number of points.
Banda took part in 54 games without testing a defeat but did not go unscathed as he was forced to drop points in five draws.
“I am delighted to win the tournament especially considering the fact that I will go abroad,” said Banda.
“I will not go there to participate but compete with grand masters and win to put Malawi on world rankings.” Banda, who holds ‘Excellency’ record, said.
He received a gold medal, a trophy and K85,000.
Baba pocketed K65,000 and a medal for being second.
Third placed Jalasi Matiyasi of Blantyre received K43, 000 and a medal for his feat. He chalked 42 points.
Dam general secretary, Suzgo Nkhoma, thanked individuals for taking part in the competition and congratulated the winner.
Nkhoma appealed to corporate world and government to help sponsor Baba and Matiyasi to strengthen Malawi representation in Russia.
