Esau Kanyenda fuelled by diesel— Yasin Osman

Be Forward Wanderers Coach, Yasin Osman, has praised veteran forward Esau Kanyenda following his goal scoring prowess in the TNM Super League.

Kanyenda’s 85th minute volley against Mafco at Balaka Stadium means that he has scored in three consecutive games.

Some pundits also described Kanyenda’s strike, which sailed beyond outstretched Mafco goalkeeper Jailosi Kapalamula, as contender for goal of the season.

Osman said Kanyenda still has something to offer to Malawi football and youngsters can learn from his movements and composure.

“Kanyenda is fuelled by diesel and not petrol. He might not be fast as petrol [engine] but he will get you there,” he said.

Osman said the title race was still open to five teams [including Silver Strikers, Blue Eagles, Civil Sporting Club and Nyasa Big Bullets] and there was no room for complacency.

“Of course, the title is ours to lose but there is still a long way to go. So, we need to take each game as it comes and, if the going gets tough as [was the case] today, we need to grind out a result,” he said.

Osman said having a deep squad was helping the cause of Wanderers as he is able to rotate players.

“This is the beauty of having a deep squad. We might lose some key players to injuries and suspensions but we still have room for rotating players,” he said.

During the game, Wanderers went ahead soon after resumption when referee Happy Ng’ambi awarded them a penalty after Mafco defender Stain Malata was adjudged to have handled in the box.

Veteran Joseph Kamwendo held his nerves to convert the penalty before Kanyenda’s second goal saw Wanderers increase their tally to 44 points from 18 games.
