Former Malawi national football team striker, Esau Kanyenda, has tipped Gabadinho Mhango to win this season’s South African Premier Soccer League (PSL) golden boot award.
Mhango leads the goalscorers’ chart with 12 league goals for his club Orlando Pirates.
Kanyenda, who turned out for Russia’s Lokomotiv Moscow and Polokwane City of South Africa, said Mhango can achieve more goals than Lesley Manyathela who scored 22 in 1997.
“I think it will be broken and Gabadinho Mhango has a chance to do that. He is playing for a big team in Orlando Pirates while I played for then a relatively small team,” a goal.com report quotes Kanyenda as per Far Post.
The report states that Black Leopards forward, Mwape Musonda, is the reigning PSL top goal-scorer after netting 16 goals last season with former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Collins Mbesuma remaining the highest scorer in the league’s era after scoring 25 times in 2005.
Flames goalpoacher Mhango told goal.com that he can break Mbesuma’s record.
“It’s possible to do that, we just have to continue working as a team. I just need extra training for myself. Actually, when I’m home, I do some finishing with my younger brother. So, I think it’s something that can help me achieve that,” Mhango said.
The former Nyasa Big Bullets star has scored in five consecutive Pirates games and is expected to continue with his sterling form in front of goal on Saturday as Pirates take on Amazulu.
Mhango took his tally to 12 with an 11th minute strike in a 3-1 win against Highlands Park on Saturday.
